Introducing AllMed’s new VP and Medical Director, Dr. David Spiro. This is the first blog in a series of posts that will outline Dr. Spiro’s goals for shaping the future of the company by developing modern training and education for new peers, and a new sense of “peer community”.
As the new Vice President and Medical Director for AllMed Healthcare Management, I wanted to take the time to introduce myself. I’m looking forward to building the future of AllMed alongside our outstanding team. My goal is to forge partnerships with both our clients and our peers to enhance and ensure the highest quality in peer review services.
Since we will be working together I wanted you to know more about me.
I received my MD from the University of California, San Francisco, and I hold a BA from the University of Virginia. Over the past 20 years, I’ve served in a variety of physician leadership roles, including Chief of Staff at a rural hospital in Oregon, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Yale University, and Chief of the Pediatric ER at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, OHSU.
Doernbecher is recognized as one of America’s leading children’s hospitals, providing the newest and most advanced pediatric treatments to more children in more places than any other hospital in Oregon or Southwest Washington. And, the work I accomplished at the hospital is particularly close to my heart as I spearheaded the fundraising efforts to build and operate the new Pediatric ER in 2009.
I’m also a passionate supporter of quality medical education and co-founded ReelDX, a producer of physician training videos. At ReelDX, we believe that the patient narrative is the most powerful voice in medical education and we have harnessed that belief to improve student attention, retention and performance using real patient stories.
But, as much as my work means to me, there’s something that means even more — my family. My wonderful wife and most ardent supporter, Kim, is a child psychologist at OHSU. My oldest son, Caleb, just graduated Lincoln High School and will be attending Pitzer College, a Claremont University School. My son, Alec, spends his time playing squash, while my younger two children speak Spanish and Mandarin. I enjoy playing squash, trail running, and spending time with our new puppy, Penny.
As VP and Medical Director at AllMed, I’m thrilled to be a part of shaping the future of the company. My goals are to work with our team to develop modern training and education for our new peers, develop a new sense of “peer community” and most importantly to develop quality metrics and feedback to peers to maintain the highest quality in our industry.
I feel I have joined a company that has numerous strengths. The first starts with an outstanding team of dedicated, hard-working individuals that take pride in their work. The second is the approach our company has used to strive for continuous improvement including pioneering the use of the LEAN methodology in our industry. I also very much appreciate the peers who work hard every day with our team – who serve as the backbone of AllMed’s quality and mission to serve patients and improve the quality of healthcare.
I look forward to continuing the tradition of the AllMed Difference to serve as an extension of our clients’ teams. And, I look forward to further developing the best team of peers in the industry. Thank you for the chance to work with you all to build the future of outstanding peer review.
